Akshay Mohanty was a talented gifted singer, composer and lyricist. He had an amazing collection of creative lyrics and delightful tunes. He is also known as Khoka Bhai. His journey a musician commenced with his interest in music in the 50’s. In the 60s, he became famous in the world of music, without having any formal music education. In fact, absence of such training actually permitted him to explore and be creative.

He was an accomplished playback singer for Oriya movies, modern light songs, bhajans, Odissi, and folk songs. In 1959, he commenced his playback singing with the song ‘Gori Gori Gori’ from the Oriya movie Maa. Since then he has sung in 129 films. He was a pioneer of non-film modern light songs based on contemporary themes and ballads based on popular legends in Orissa. Mohanty also wrote a few novels, short stories, poems and a travelogue. He has co-directed a movie and also acted in three.

He won many awards due to his perseverance and skill. His live performances all over the world establish him as the most skilled innovative geniuses of modern Orissa.


Childhood and Personal Life:


Born to Mr. Bichitrananda Mohanty and Mrs. Subarna Manjari Mohanty,in bankimundai village dist of cuttack now { kendrapara } Akshaya had no formal training in music. Many believe that while his talent and dedication were the reasons behind his ultimate success, lack of formal training in music allowed him to experiment without being bound by the tradition.


At the age of 22, he joined government services in his home city Cuttack, but quit after seven years to devote himself completely to music. By that time, he had been approved by the All India Radio as a lyricist and composer.


He married in 1967 to Mrs. Prabina Mohanty. He has two sons and two daughters. His son, popularly known as ‘Kabba’ is following his father’s footstep and is already a popular stage singer.
